An Generosity of Strangers: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Role That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Because my travel mate was interested in starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had booked a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – adjacent to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student approached me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off informed my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in so many ways. I didn't possess the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and request employment. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Critically, that gig at Columbia resulted in a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
