The star has handed over the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize cash to the trust for venues, which functions to preserve the UK's grassroots live music spots.

He was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the top album of the previous year.

Fender has opted to hand the money over to the MVT, in appreciation of the essential function small stages fulfilled in his early career.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the shows I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was just getting going," stated Fender. "These venues are legendary, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these spaces have shut down – roughly 16% of the total UK scene.

In the last year, major artists like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its initiatives to support the industry, by including a small levy to their admission fees, which goes to help local stages.

He also participated, collecting over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to support numerous grassroots venues across the UK.

These funds assisted locations that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues arising from water damage, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Some locations obtained monetary aid in improving facilities and gear that positively impacted performers and audiences.

"The idea that revenue from shows in major spaces backs the smaller venues, where it begins for musicians like me, is just common sense," Fender has stated.

He is not the first artist to give his honor winnings to charitable organizations.

In the band won the trophy in the mid-90s for their record Different Class, vocalist Cocker declared that the band would donate their winnings to the organization War Child.

That year, musician Ms Dynamite split her prize between a few good causes, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also gave a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked updated gear," she explained to outlets.

In recent years, Ezra Collective donated their funds to the local youth club that developed their group, alongside other local music groups.

And the 1994 recipients M People donated their award to a MS organization after a close contact was found to have the illness.

"Receiving the award was ample," said vocalist Small. "The prize was the extra but we could do without the bonus, because we had the cake. So our winning touched another person's life."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had rescued several local spots in south-east England, by placing them under public stewardship.

The first in the city and the other in Bristol were bought under the community ownership initiative, which is supported by a national body and enthusiasts who buy "shares" in the properties.
